My mom goes a little crazy during the holiday season—this year she cut out multiple winter-themed paper chains and draped them all around the house. After some prompting from her, I photographed a few of them. In an attempt to be a brat, I laid on the floor of my kitchen and took a photo of this creation, which was located on my kitchen ceiling.

Dedication to the books pays off

Before a packed Pamplin gym and a number of live-feed watchers in the Chapel, Riley Johnson (’11) was honored at Lewis & Clark’s graduation with the Rena J. Ratte Award, best understood as the honor of being the class of 2011’s Valedictorian. Before graduation at the Honors Convocation the Friday before, Johnson and the other nominees for the award were brought up on stage and announced that Johnson had won.

“It just made me feel good—damn good—to have some sort of tangible proof that my endless bending over books had paid off,” said Johnson.

The award itself is a great honor.  It comes with a cash stipend, honor and extra pizzazz for the résumé. 

Otherwise, “Nobody outside of LC knows what it means,” noted Johnson.

As for getting a job? The Ratte Award has not sent Johnson to the top of the career world, although he does have a job at a used bookstore in Montana, which is likely the Powell’s of Missoula.  Most likely, he’ll see the real benefits of his award as he begins applying for graduate school.  

“I enjoyed being in class and doing homework and talking to my professors at office hours a little more than most people,” Johnson reflected.  “Really, it was just a matter of passion: the things I’m passionate about are also the things that Rena Ratte was passionate about.”

Throughout his college career, Johnson wasn’t in pursuit of the award, per se, but has always been the picture of a dedicated and passionate student.  His time was made up mostly of homework and research, with incrementally smaller and smaller amounts of time dedicated to activities like eating, sleeping and socializing. Johnson did have a “motley but endearing cadre of nerds, misfits and grotesques behind me the whole way,” helping Johnson with his clothes shopping and sanity.  Additionally, a handful of professors (for whom he expresses incredible gratitude) spent many office hours witnessing the nervous breakdowns Johnson claims to have had.

“That’s all I need in life: somebody to listen while I have a nervous breakdown and somebody to do my clothes shopping for me. LC provided both of those,” said Johnson.

Now that college has come and gone, and Johnson has exited with a large bang, he continues to read and work.  At the moment, his job in Montana is providing him with copious literature.  He misses school but has yet to figure out what he wants to do in the future.  Throughout this year, Johnson will be working on decision-making and will be heading off to a graduate program as soon as he makes some of those decisions.
