PL: We just got “I Want To Grow Up” at our radio station. We’re really digging it.

CG: Oh cool. Thank you.

PL: How has this album differed in the process of recording versus the past ones?

CG: Well, in the past it has usually been just me and my drum machine, and I played all the instruments and did everything myself. But on this one a couple of my friends helped me, and we recorded it in an actual studio and it’s a full band.

PL: What inspired you to make that change?

CG: I don’t know. I knew I wanted to do an album without the drum machine and just do a regular album. My friends White Fang were in a real studio for the first time, because they had always done everything themselves too, so they were recording a new album in a real legit studio and it was sounding really amazing. Just listening to their reasoning behind doing that, I got inspired. I was like, “Hey I wanna do that too!” Just because that’s what you do when your friends are doing something that you think is cool. That’s kind of how it happened.

PL: You continued with the Descendents theme?

CG: Oh yeah, always.

PL: Can we expect any comics on the new album?

CG: Yeah, actually I have a whole new zine. It’s not a comic book like the “Real Shit Daily” one is, but it’s a series of illustrated haikus about celebrity encounters that I’ve had. It comes with my new album. I don’t have any with me tonight, but when my new album’s out it’ll come with that.

PL: Do you have a lot of celebrity encounters?

CG: Yeah I’ve had like, 16 maybe. 17, because Chris Hardwick just ran past me the other day. He ran past me on the sidewalk.

PL: Who’s the most famous celebrity you’ve had an encounter with?

CG: I’m pretty sure I saw Don Cheadle. He’s not in the book, but probably Ethan Hawke is the most famous in that book. Or like John Mayer, I saw him. He’s pretty famous.

PL: What’s your favorite Tarantino movie?

CG: I don’t know, I haven’t seen them all. But I don’t really have a favorite.

PL: Well then, who’s “so cool”?

CG: I figured that was it! You were trying to get me to say “True Romance.” (‘93) That’s a good movie, and I do love Christian Slater. I don’t know, who is so cool? It’s like why is the sky blue?

PL: Can we expect any more “Uncomfortably Close” interviews?

CG: Hopefully! I actually have two that are done that are like two years old that I just can’t get off the camera. I can’t put them from my camera onto my computer, because both things are extremely old and they just won’t work together anymore. I have one with Peach Kelli Pop and one with Jaill that are both just like hanging in limbo.

PL: Describe your sound in one sentence. Please.

CG: It’s like the Ramones with a drum machine.

PL: What music has influenced you the most?

CG: Fastbacks, Descendents obviously, Blink 182, the Ramones, Nobunny, Mike Hunchback, Tom Tom Club, Madonna, Jim Carroll Band, Dinosaur Jr., The Breeders.

PL: What’s the first song you ever wrote?

CG: I remember I was writing songs when I was in first grade, but I don’t remember any of them. The first song I ever remember writing is a rap song called “Do the Pencil.” I was in second grade and I wrote it and then I brought it in for show and tell, and it had a dance to go with it and I did the dance for everyone for show and tell.

PL: Was the dance called “The Pencil”?

CG: Yes, it was a song and accompanying dance.

PL: Kale, spinach or chard?

CG: Spinach.

PL: Any relation to Cee Lo Green? Or do you want to collaborate with him in the future?

CG: No, and no. He stole my shit, I think. He started wearing sunglasses all the time. Not cool. Yeah, he sucks.

PL: What do you like to do in Portland?

CG: I actually haven’t been here in a really long time, I think the last time I was here was in 2013. But, I don’t know, smoke weed. Walk around and look at gardens.

PL: If you were a dog, what kind of dog would you be?

CG: I would be any kind of dog, because I love dogs and often do wish that I was a dog. But I would probably be the kind that you’re not allergic to, like a Portuguese Water Dog or something. Because they like the water, and they have hair instead of fur.

PL: Thanks so much.
